Pierre-Jean Larraqué

Château de Barre

Appellations : Bordeaux Supérieur and Graves de Vayres

Vintages: 2019 and 2020

Third property of Pierre Jean Larraqué Vineyards, the Château de Barre is a place steeped in history. Its wine-making cellar, entirely made up of concrete vats, is located in a building that looks like a cathedral. At the back of the park, an orangery and a chapel dating from the 18th century contribute to the unique charm of this property.

The opinion of our oenologists

Château de Barre, Bordeaux Supérieur :

Robe : Beautiful ruby colour.
Nose : Red fruits and spices.
Taste : Round, with ripe, fine and well-integrated tannins, some morello cherry notes.

Château de Barre, Graves de Vayres :

Nose : Delicate in a bouquet of peach, lemon and white flowers.

Note : The Semillon/Sauvignon blend expresses itself with a sobriety that honours them with an aromatic complexity from freshness to fatness.

The Bordeaux Supérieur appellation

The Bordeaux Supérieur appellation extends over an area of 10,000 ha where we find very varied terroirs with limestone, clay-limestone, sandy or even gravel and boulbène soils. The vines are mainly planted with red grape varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and minority varieties such as Petit Verdot, Malbec or Carmenère. Bordeaux Supérieur whites are sweet wines composed mainly of Sauvignon Blanc & Gris, Sémillon and Muscadelle. The ageing period for red and white wines is 3 to 5 years.

The Graves de Vayres appellation

The Graves de Vayres appellation has existed since 1926, making it the second oldest appellation in the Bordeaux region and one of the first wine-growing associations in the Gironde. Located on the left bank of the Dordogne, west of Libourne, the vineyard has sandy, clay-gravel to gravel soils.

With a planted area of 700 ha, 316 ha of which are for reds, this confidential AOP includes 30 estates that produce 20,000 hectolitres/year, 80% of which are reds. The most used grape varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon for the reds, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon for the whites.

The wines of Graves de Vayres can be kept for 2 to 5 years for the reds, 1 to 3 years for the dry whites and 3 to 6 years for the sweet whites.
